A question about the Refs in the NAHL

I was wondering why the refs in the NAHL never get out of the way of the puck when play is along the boards? I have noticed in all of the games that I have seen that the when the puck is hit along the boards or towards the refs it often hits them or their skate. I have noticed in college hockey or the NHL that the refs often push themselves up on the boards to avoid the puck. They will back up against the boards and push themselves off the ice to avoid the puck or sometimes the action. The refs in the NAHL that I have seen never do this and often get in the way. Why is that?
Just a dumb question to pass the Christmas break..
