Probably more like 20-30. It actually took Talent to be a Cab Calloway.

oh god, you're one of those crazy racists who actually think rappers have no talent. that is the most hilarious thing you have said in quite a while. Laughing Laughing

And you are probably one of their Apologists who think you have to study at Julliard for years to be able to scratch a Record with a Needle.

Call me nuts, but I always figured it took about as much talent to scratch a record as it does to play a washboard or toot on a Whiskey Jug.

you are nuts. and clearly not well informed if you think all there is to rap music is scratching a record.

jc's right. It also involves either stealing... er... um... "sampling" another person's music and inserting your own words or hitting a button on a keyboard. You also have to have poor grammar and a nonexistent vocabulary with the ability to make up words when you can't think of anything to rhyme with "shizzle".

"Their"? I was actually referring to all rappers, from emenem to tupac.

As regards comedy, a great deal of comedy is obscene, regardless of who's doing it. Look at Robin Williams or Doug Stanhope. Comparatively, look at the comedy of Bill Cosby. He's made a hell of a career making people laugh & he keeps it clean.

i heard all this same shit from my parents about rock music. besides, i don't take rap that way at all. i take most (but not all) of it as social commentary about those and other issues, not necessarily as the promotion of the behaviors.

I disagree completely. In the beginning, I can see it as a social commentary on a life that wasn't getting much attention. Now (with very few exceptions), criminal behavior is definitely being glorified. It's in the music, the videos, the media... Everywhere. Most kids emulate the behavior of their heroes. If they see those heroes speaking positively about criminal behavior, it's just one more contributive factor. If you listen to the music, they aren't saying "This is what's going on and it's wrong". They are bragging.

I think it depends on my mood. I think Doug Stanhope is a fucking riot, but I like it that I can watch Cosby with my family. I totally agree about Robin Williams. He has about 10% funny, and 90% goofy shit that he did on Mork & Mindy.

i really don't see or hear much about kids listening to rap music and going out and shooting policemen or victimizing women by forcing them to "back up that big booty" against their will. any more than kids were going out and worshipping the devil after listening to black sabbath. at any rate, i know that art can have an effect on people, both for good and for bad. in the end, though. the individual is responsible for what they take from it, not the artists. like i said, this entire discussion sounds like a bunch of old people bitching about "those kids" new music. i say, fuck that shit. move aside and let the new generations take their place.

my kids didn't care anything about cosby, but i can see where we need comdians like him to entertain the family. even my very highly advanced 9 y/o grandson might have trouble grasping stanhope's humor.
