The plan
Cooper, 40, never envisioned a moment like Monday's when he began coaching on, in essence, a volunteer basis nine years ago.
It wasn't until 2002, when he led Michigan's Metro Jets to a Junior B national championship, that Cooper realized he was on to something. He was floored when the nationally respected Honeybaked Midget AAA team came calling the next year, and a year after that, he shut down his law practice and moved to Texarkana, Texas, to become coach and GM of the expansion Bandits.
Cooper believed it would take three years to win a title with the Bandits, but it was rough going in a lousy rink and a market with little use for hockey. After three years, the Bandits moved to the St. Louis area and promptly won consecutive Robertson Cup titles — despite returning only five players from the first championship team.
Roster turnover is one of the running themes in junior hockey, but the Gamblers had 14 players from last year's club on the protected list it released on Monday. One of the first challenges for Cooper and his staff — he won't begin looking for a full-time assistant coach until after Wednesday's United States Hockey League entry draft — will be shaking any lingering doubts from those players who endured the tumultuous 13-41-6 season that led to coach/GM Mark Mazzoleni's ouster on Feb. 26.
"We're just hoping that it's all out," Cooper said. "That's going to be our job, is change the culture of the environment and the team."
Burkart will lead the Gamblers' scouting department as director of player development, replacing John Gill, who had been with the team since 2005. He'll be chiefly responsible for finding players who fit the scheme and are willing to accept Cooper's no-days-off philosophy.[/b]
Looks like Burhart will follow hime to Green Bay at this was posted in the Green Bay Press Gazzette
