Kev, don't talk about hitting on deck batters as many of us remember Mr Christenson plunking the on deck Evansville batter, effectively ending his career. I think charges were filed but I don't remember them going anywhere.

Actually, that is what I was thinking about when I wrote the post. I think that was one of those situations that clearly fell outside of the game and charges were warrented. I think the Bertuzzi deal was kind of close, and could have gone either way. The Fleck thing just does not strike me as criminal - although it should bring a pretty hefty suspension.

Hey folks, I am the one that mentioned on the other message board about the law not being able to cover incidents on the ice. Yes, I am wrong. I believe, and correct me if I am wrong, the law won't react unless it is obvious there was a criminal act committed. This is what I remember from last years incident with Bossier when charges were hoped to be made.

This entire incident sickens me and I am just so glad to hear Travis is doing ok. I'm sure it will take Toby a long time to feel comfortable with him on the ice. It's not an easy thing to witness and I really feel for her!!

exactly. But being the wife of a hockey player it's something that could happen at any time to anyone. CHEAPSHOT or not. Won't be a lawsuit, clayton will recover, the rival okc/wichita games will continue to happen, life will go on, and tape reviews and suspensions will follow. (if deemed by the governing bodies to be appropriate)

BOTTOM LINE: We beat ourselves in that game.

Hali,

You are right. Almost all of the time, a DA will not press charges for conduct which is part of the game. That is why no charges are ever brought for fighting, etc. However, if the incident goes WAY (like to an entirely new level) beyond the normal conduct in a game, a DA is more likely to look into charges. To my knowledge, there have only been a couple of incidents in Wichita. One was a Wings game where a St. Louis player actually punched a fan behind the penalty box. If I remember correctly, they actually had him in handcuffs still wearing his soccer uniform. Of course, I think we all can agree hitting a fan is never acceptable.

The reason for this is pretty simple. Hockey players basically give implied consent to the normal activity of the game. Thus, if the actions are normally expected, all of the players on the ice have consented (at least according to the law) to any risk associated with the game. For example, if Derek Parker gets into a bar fight with Tyler Hanchuck, he could face criminal charges...but if Derek Parker fights Tyler Hanchuck during a game, that is considered a customary part of the sport and both players consented to it.

I highly doubt that last night's incident will (or should) bring charges. The main reason I even bring this up is due to Fleck's history. For whatever reason, I do not feel the CHL has done enough to tone down his cheap shots. If the CHL refuses to take some significant action, then I do feel that it would be appropriate for the authorities to make clear to the CHL, the Blazers and Mr. Sauter that our community won't tolerate this type of violence.

Hopefully the CHL steps to the plate and ignores OKC and Sauter's "power" and comes down hard on Fleck.

There will not be any charges against Fleck or the Team. HOWEVER The league will take care of this. You will probably see a 10 game suspension. What you, the fan, will not be privy to is the fines and or that talking to the Blazers will get. They will also be under a microscope for the rest of the season, especially Fleck and Sauter.

You know those two will catch even more crap in barns around the league. Players will be giving shots to the OKC players and so will the fans. Fleck may have won the battle but the repercussions for the team will last the whole season.

criminal charges

Let the hockey players and teams and officials police themselves, for the most part they do a damn fine job, leave the district attorneys, cops etc out of it, let the league handle it. That's what is wrong with hockey these days, too damn many do-gooders want to ruin this sport!

The public courts need to stay out of the sports business. You start taking action here, where does it end? Misdemeanor assualt for elbowing, or roughing? Sodomy charges for boarding, or checking from behind? It's just rediculous to bring the law into these games, unless the game goes outside the glass.

was a good chance that that could have happened that game!

and just curious was there anything that happened after the game in the stands or outside the arena?? i know a couple of sheriffs and they told me that there were several arrests during and after the game, just curious if anything had boiled over outside?

We are going to start that tonight in Bossier. Sauter and all the Blazers will get a very vocal reception.

Gametime--

I dunno about after the game arrests... BUT there was this one particular guy who lobbed a Large coke cup complete with lid and straw toward the ice from behind the visitors penalty box at the end of the game I am not sure it actually made the ice. There is that little area down to the side of the Penalty box where the Sheriff's Officer sits... Well I think that cup managed to land in that area... possibly srtiking the officer (I really don't know as there were people standing up in my line of sight... but I can say this... that particular L.E.O. wasn't any too happy with the gentleman who threw the cup. He marched up the section... collared the guy... gave him the what-for... had him surrender his car keys to his wife.... and then escorted him from the arena... leaving a stunned wife, and three crying little girls behind in his wake.
Was Classic.!!!

Lesson for today kids....

DO NOT THROW SHIT AT THE ICE >>>> ESPECIALLY IF THERE IS ANY CHANCE A L.E.O. COULD BE ANYWHERE CLOSE TO THAT OBJECTS LANDING POINT.
