Crosby Getting Captain

I know this has already been brought up, but since he finally did get it, I thought I might as well start a new thread. I don't think he should get it. He's too young. Give it to a vet for another year or two. He's a great player, but that doesn't neccessarily mean he's a good leader. Here's the Yahoo! Sports story. What does everybody think?

I think he's too young.

However, his presence on the Pens has brought out a WHOLE new group of hockey "fans" (who all dream of marrying him someday). They buy premium tickets and will buy new jerseys with the "C" on them. That's great for the Pens bottom line and Crosby's bank balance, but I wonder at what cost to Crosby personally................

No cost, just profit...all this exposure is great for him, come contract time his presence in Pittsburgh is just money in the bank for this young man. As long as he has good people advising him and taking care of his finances, he should be very secure in his future endeavors even after his hockey career. Don't worry about Sid...he should be well taken care of!

It's not Sid I'm worried about. It's the Pens. Check this out...

Wanna see what happens to 19-year-old captains?

Two words: Vincent Lecavalier. Given the captaincy less than 2 months before his 20th birthday, his production declined and his selfish play hurt the Lightning. He was third on the Lightning in scoring for the 2000-01 season, but the team had the second worst record in the league, finishing last in the weak Southeast division. Tons of young talent on this team-- Lecavalier, Brad Richards, Martin St. Louis, Pavel Kubina, Adrian Aucoin, Dan Cloutier, Cory Sarich... But no veteran leadership!

He was stripped of the captaincy in 2001-02, his production fell to 37 points in 76 games. Dave Andreychuk became captain. Two years later, with the same core of young talent, this team won the Cup.

A guy like Mark Recchi should be given the captaincy. Last year he wasn't afraid to call out Crosby for whining and complaining about calls. No one should hold the captaincy of an NHL team until he has two to three years of experience under his belt and is at least 21 years of age.

I'm gonna go with what B73 said. I believe that last season the same subject came up. I will disagree with B73's characterization of VL's play as selfish. I would be more inclined to say that he was trying to lead by example and do it all. Not every star player is cut out to wear the C. Look at Mike Modano. Awesome player, but lacked the fire and/or personality to do the job.

Back to Sid. I don't think he has the maturity for the job. There is absolutely no doubt that he is the future of the NHL, but I think it takes 5 years or longer to make the adjustment to the game at the NHL level. Let him have an A for a year or two and bring him along slowly. I believe that he has gained the respect of his teammates with his raw ability. Give him a couple of years to respect his leadership. He already has alot on his plate just living up to the hype. No use piling on any more. Hell we gotta remember- this kid ain't even legal to drink yet.

I'm not entirely sure about this but wasn't Stevie Y made captain about this time in his career?

Yzerman was at least two years older, 21, possibly close to 22. Crosby is 19 now and will be just over 20 when he plays his first game as captain.
