Crosby getting the "C"

General manager Ray Shero and coach Michel Therrien must decide whether 19-year-old Sidney Crosby - the team's best player and the face of the franchise - should wear the "C" as the team captain at the Oct. 5 opener against Philadelphia.

Well who thinks Sidney is ready to be the captain of an NHL team. I dont know if he is quite ready yet. He did have a great year but do you think he is leaderhsip material especially with guys like Recchi and Leclair there for potential captains.

Wanna see what happens to 19-year-old captains?

Two words: Vincent Lecavalier. Given the captaincy less than 2 months before his 20th birthday, his production declined and his selfish play hurt the Lightning. He was third on the Lightning in scoring for the 2000-01 season, but the team had the second worst record in the league, finishing last in the weak Southeast division. Tons of young talent on this team-- Lecavalier, Brad Richards, Martin St. Louis, Pavel Kubina, Adrian Aucoin, Dan Cloutier, Cory Sarich... But no veteran leadership!

He was stripped of the captaincy in 2001-02, his production fell to 37 points in 76 games. Dave Andreychuk became captain. Two years later, with the same core of young talent, this team won the Cup.

A guy like Mark Recchi should be given the captaincy. Last year he wasn't afraid to call out Crosby for whining and complaining about calls. No one should hold the captaincy of an NHL team until he has two to three years of experience under his belt and is at least 21 years of age.

Gotta agree with B73 here. While I might not totally agree with his opinion about selfish play on the part of VL, I definitely agree that the leadership role of captaincy should be reserved for the players who have been under the gun and put their time in on the ice. Not to say that young players can't or shouldn't take a leadership role on a team, just that the responsibility of being the captain should rest on the shoulders of those players who have proven that they know what it takes to win.

He did..the funny thing is that they pulled the same bit on Gretzky last year..he wouldn't answer the question and had people throw the "reporter" out!
