Dad says intruder came with black eyes
BY LORI KURTZMAN

An 18-year-old showed up in court Monday with a puffy face and two black eyes. He was accused of creeping into a 15-year-old girl’s bedroom early Saturday and instead of finding the girl – who, as it turned out, wasn’t even home – he encountered her father.

It seemed a classic tale of Dad getting even with a prowling paramour, of pops preserving the purity of his dear daughter with a good old-fashioned butt-whoopin’.

Only it didn’t quite happen that way.

“I didn’t black his eyes,” Larry Hackett said. “I would have – but I didn’t.”

Hackett, 58, father to three girls, said he was watching television at about 3 a.m. in his Deer Park home when his dogs started acting up. He heard a noise upstairs and then he heard footsteps. He walked into his daughter’s room and there, sitting on the bed, was Jesse Laboiteaux, shoeless, bruises on his face.

“What are you doing here?’” Hackett asked.

Laboiteaux told him he’d gotten a text message from the girl.

Come over, she’d written.

“No, she didn’t,” Hackett told him. “She’s not even here.”

Hackett said Laboiteaux – who is not his daughter’s boyfriend, contrary to some media reports – got up to leave and when he tried to stop him the two scuffled. Hackett got a scratch on his hand and a bruise on his arm.

But he said he didn’t leave a mark on Laboiteaux. Those black eyes, he said, were already there.

Laboiteaux ultimately broke free and tore out the front door with such force that he ripped off the safety chain, court records state. Hackett called police, who picked up the teen a few blocks away.

Laboiteaux was charged with burglary and assault. In court Monday, his lawyer noted the condition of his client’s face and remarked that the encounter between the men “didn’t end very well.”

That wasn’t his fault, Hackett said. Looking back on the incident, he probably should have grabbed a baseball bat when he went to investigate his intruder, he said, and if he had, “I may have hit him.”

Instead, he was more focused on keeping the teen in his home, on grilling him about what brought him there.

A grand jury is set to hear the facts of Laboiteaux ’s case next week.

As for Hackett, he said he doesn’t want a harsh punishment for the teen, but he’d like to see him receive some kind of treatment or community service.

And to stay away from his daughter.

Early Saturday morning, hours before the sun made its appearance, Jesse Laboiteaux hoisted himself onto an air conditioner and crept through the window of a 15-year-old girl he knows.

Problem was, the girl wasn’t there.

Her dad was.

That probably explains why Laboiteaux, 18, of Sycamore Township, was in court today facing a pair of charges with a pair of black eyes.

“Obviously,” his lawyer told a judge, it “didn’t end very well.”

According to court records and police reports: At about 3 a.m. Saturday, Larry Hackett heard someone moving around his Deer Park home. He walked into his daughter’s bedroom – she was away on a sleepover – and found Laboiteaux, a blond kid wearing a striped shirt.

The teen tried to leave, and Hackett blocked him. The two struggled.

Laboiteaux got the two black eyes; Hackett injured his left hand.

Laboiteaux eventually broke away and burst out the front door, ripping off the safety chain. He grabbed a pair of shoes he’d left near the side of the house and ran.

Police picked him up a few blocks away, at the intersection of Spencer and Saint Clair avenues.

He’s charged with burglary and assault and was jailed on a $5,000 bond.

you tell me. you seem to know exactly what the TRUTH of this situation is. and have all the answers to it.
as for me, i really don;t feel like i know much just from reading these articles. i am very curious about why the kid would crawl thru the window of this girl's house instead of knocking on the door. and why he says she texted him. and whether she did text him to come over, but didn't tell him she wasn't at her house. and exactly what the relationship is. and exactly what the father knows about the relationship. and why the dad seems tro know that he is not his daughter's boyfriend. and why the dad didn't let him leave when he wanted to (sounds like he could have i.d'd him for the police if he wanted tof ile charges). and whether he did have the black eyes before or whether the dad is lying about that.
maybe the kid is a bad actor who should be charged for breaking and entering. but, you couldn;t tell that from the stories. like i said, you don't know much about this. i have learned something from it, though. your idea of dealing with problems is to assault people first and then find out what is going on later.

Are you actually that much of an idiot, or do you just make stupid posts like this to get a rise out of people?
You people astonish the hell out of me.

The daughter wasn't there. Then the reason he showed up obviously was not to get laid! I think that this poor young man was going to put a teddy bear with hersheys kisses on her pillow. What a romantic gesture.

And for the dad to say "Yeah his eyes were already black when he showed up at my house". C'MON, If you believe that I have some ocean front property in Nebraska to sell you!

By the way 5for, If you read the posts on the thread that I linked you to. It is about 50-50 for and against this young man. So how in the heck could I be trying to 'make a rise out of people'. If a person were trying to do that don't you think that they would pick a topic that is 90-10 or 100-0 and then pick the other side???

This is what burns my ass about law enforcement. There is a dispute between two parties and the cops will believe one person 100% and the other person will be totally in the wrong.

That is not how life works! There is always going to be some gray areas.

Fuck, the dad even admitted that he tried to physically stop the boy from leaving and a scuffle ensued. Like jc said, he already had the kid ID'd.

There is no way in hell that the dad is 100% the good guy in this case. I hope that this boy gets his day in court, and like I said before I hope he sues his ass off!

AND, I hope the girl marries a fucking drug addicted whacked out meth injecting piece of shit creep. and the dad will say 'GEE, I wish you would have married that Lobideaux boy' Rolling Eyes

let's be real, mike. i share your frustration with the "jump to conclusions" and "inject my personal biases into every situation" attitudes that some of these folks have, but, really, let's not be wishing that kind of stuff on people. we don;t know what is going on in these people's lives. i would rather the girl marry someone who actually would sneak in her room just to put a teddy bear and hersheys kisses on her pillow.

i'll bet she's glad that it's almost summer and school is out or near it. him, too. i'm guessing her dad has given her a good 2-3 weeks of serious harrassment there.

Instead of a ballbat the dad should have grabbed his .357 and took it upstairs to investigate.....then instead of wasting taxpayers time and money in the court system all we would be doing now is discussing his funeral arraingments!

I don't think a kid should be killed for sniffing around his daughter. But slapping him around a little seems appropriate

that is insane.
besides, if he had a .357 he would have been 43 X more likely to kill a friend or relative with it than an intruder. hell, he probably would have accidentally shot his daughter already and we wouldn't be discussing it at all.

i think it is generally better to find out what's going on and then act rather than act and then finding out what's going on.

thanks for the afternoon laugh...I knew you would throw that stat in there!! Laughing

Hard to shoot the girl she wasn't home---He came in thru the window that is an intruder (unwanted, uninvited) so aim and fire!

In all reality...maybe the girl did text him and invite him over. Knowing she herself wasn't there and her dad was home. Maybe the guy had been stalking her and this way she figured her dad could beat the tar out of him and he would stay away
