Dad says intruder came with black eyes
BY LORI KURTZMAN
An 18-year-old showed up in court Monday with a puffy face and two black eyes. He was accused of creeping into a 15-year-old girl’s bedroom early Saturday and instead of finding the girl – who, as it turned out, wasn’t even home – he encountered her father.
It seemed a classic tale of Dad getting even with a prowling paramour, of pops preserving the purity of his dear daughter with a good old-fashioned butt-whoopin’.
Only it didn’t quite happen that way.
“I didn’t black his eyes,” Larry Hackett said. “I would have – but I didn’t.”
Hackett, 58, father to three girls, said he was watching television at about 3 a.m. in his Deer Park home when his dogs started acting up. He heard a noise upstairs and then he heard footsteps. He walked into his daughter’s room and there, sitting on the bed, was Jesse Laboiteaux, shoeless, bruises on his face.
“What are you doing here?’” Hackett asked.
Laboiteaux told him he’d gotten a text message from the girl.
Come over, she’d written.
“No, she didn’t,” Hackett told him. “She’s not even here.”
Hackett said Laboiteaux – who is not his daughter’s boyfriend, contrary to some media reports – got up to leave and when he tried to stop him the two scuffled. Hackett got a scratch on his hand and a bruise on his arm.
But he said he didn’t leave a mark on Laboiteaux. Those black eyes, he said, were already there.
Laboiteaux ultimately broke free and tore out the front door with such force that he ripped off the safety chain, court records state. Hackett called police, who picked up the teen a few blocks away.
Laboiteaux was charged with burglary and assault. In court Monday, his lawyer noted the condition of his client’s face and remarked that the encounter between the men “didn’t end very well.”
That wasn’t his fault, Hackett said. Looking back on the incident, he probably should have grabbed a baseball bat when he went to investigate his intruder, he said, and if he had, “I may have hit him.”
Instead, he was more focused on keeping the teen in his home, on grilling him about what brought him there.
A grand jury is set to hear the facts of Laboiteaux ’s case next week.
As for Hackett, he said he doesn’t want a harsh punishment for the teen, but he’d like to see him receive some kind of treatment or community service.
And to stay away from his daughter.

Early Saturday morning, hours before the sun made its appearance, Jesse Laboiteaux hoisted himself onto an air conditioner and crept through the window of a 15-year-old girl he knows.
Problem was, the girl wasn’t there.
Her dad was.
That probably explains why Laboiteaux, 18, of Sycamore Township, was in court today facing a pair of charges with a pair of black eyes.
“Obviously,” his lawyer told a judge, it “didn’t end very well.”
According to court records and police reports: At about 3 a.m. Saturday, Larry Hackett heard someone moving around his Deer Park home. He walked into his daughter’s bedroom – she was away on a sleepover – and found Laboiteaux, a blond kid wearing a striped shirt.
The teen tried to leave, and Hackett blocked him. The two struggled.
Laboiteaux got the two black eyes; Hackett injured his left hand.
Laboiteaux eventually broke away and burst out the front door, ripping off the safety chain. He grabbed a pair of shoes he’d left near the side of the house and ran.
Police picked him up a few blocks away, at the intersection of Spencer and Saint Clair avenues.
He’s charged with burglary and assault and was jailed on a $5,000 bond.
