Hall of Fame Weekend is Special but If You Missed It…
by Russ Cohen
2006-11-20
Habs captain Saku Koivu signed some autographs over the weekend.

This past Monday the Hockey Hall of Fame inducted its newest members, Patrick Roy, Herb Brooks, Harley Hotchkiss, and Dick Duff. But all of this happened on Monday and if that’s when you tuned in then you missed a lot of action.

There was the Hall of Fame game on Saturday night that saw the Leafs pummel the Canadiens 5-1. The inductees were honored before the game and on Sunday there was the annual Legends Classic Game. 10 Hall of Famer’s played in this one and again hockey fans should all experience the full weekend at least once in their lifetime.

With all of these events the real star of the past few days is the Hall of Fame itself. If you haven’t been there lately it’s truly in a league of their own as far as the archiving of relics and even audio. Hockeyology is lending a helping hand to make sure that anything that the site has covered that is of a historical nature will now be preserved for years to come.

The inductees must have had some great conversation.

The HHOF has flat screens with vintage interviews that are constantly running. They have redone their International section and now when you walk in you will see some new showcases that include facsimile autographs. Roy’s was nice and that included some of his vintage gear but Mario Lemieux’s area was a work of art. It included some his earliest memorabilia and his signature is a one of a kind in my book.

Some of the newest items include an apology note regarding the riot that took place in 1955 when the NHL suspended Maurice Richard for the season on March 13th and that meant he would miss the playoffs and a potential Stanley Cup run.

I have been visiting the Hall for the last five years straight and it’s really grown in leaps and bounds. So much so that the Hall will be moving it’s archives off the premises in the near future so they can continue to house their prized artifacts.
The inductees all had items on display.

They have grown at such a fast rate that it stands to reason that fans could visit twice a year and see some different showcases because they are constantly rotating the items.

From a collectibles standpoint the Hall has really added some great items to their gift shop. They have a great selection of hats and sweaters but their autographed pucks for sale are pretty extensive as well.

I bought the 2006 HHOF inductee puck that was just unpacked and it was less than $7.00 Canadian!

The Hockey Hall of Fame is a museum of the highest order. Some folks like Rembrandts and I marvel at an old Colorado Rockies jersey.
