Amarillo newspaper article:
Gorillas' hire backs out
By Austin Corder
austin.corder@amarillo.com
The Amarillo Gorillas' search for a new head coach ended Tuesday afternoon, then abruptly resumed several hours later.
New Gorillas owner Randy Sanders thought he had his coach, Tom Coolen, and the team announced the hiring in a news release Tuesday afternoon.
But by Tuesday evening, Sanders received a call from Coolen.
"We were all set to go, but there were some undisclosed issues with his wife and family that made it impossible for him to leave his home in Canada," Sanders said. "So, he is no longer a candidate for the position, and it's extremely disappointing, but my first rule in business is that family comes first.
''We're devastated here because we thought we had our guy.
"I guess I had a wide-open net and missed my shot. Now we have to go back a few steps and find another option."
Coolen was serious about the Gorillas' job, having signed a contract, Sanders said.
Sanders said he let Coolen out of the contract and hopes to have a coach named by next week.
"We have to have someone in place by the end of May or the first of June by the latest, but I hope to have it done by the end of next week," Sanders said. "We had over 22 resumes at the beginning of the search, so there is definitely interest out there in this position."
The Gorillas' job came open when Jim Wiley's two-year contract expired.
The Gorillas missed the Central Hockey League playoffs last season, finishing 22-32-10.

Gorillas, Coolen score on rebound
New coach reverses course, says he will guide CHL team
By Austin Corder

The Amarillo Gorillas front office capped a 36-hour roller coaster ride Wednesday by naming Tom Coolen as the team's new head coach for the second time in two days.
Gorillas owner Randy Sanders initially announced the hiring Tuesday afternoon, but the deal fell apart when family issues caused Coolen to have second thoughts. By Tuesday night, he was no longer a candidate, according to Sanders.
Wednesday morning, however, Sanders received a call from Coolen.
"He and his wife had spent most of the night discussing the issues they had and decided that this was the move they wanted to make," Sanders said. "I got reassurance that this is what they both want to do, and Tom conceded that it was just a moment of insecurity."
Contaced by phone Wednesday evening, Coolen said, "It was really just a matter of ironing out a few points on both ends. But it's taken care of and I'm looking forward to starting with the team."
On Tuesday night, Sanders described the situation as "devastating" because he was confident in Coolen's ability to not only coach at a high level, but also because of his commitment to the local community.
"After I talked with Tom (Wednesday) I had to think about everything for a while, and decided that he is the right guy for the job," Sanders said. "But I told him to be sure, because he wasn't making a commitment to me, he was making it to the Amarillo community."
Coolen has 25 years of head coaching experience at various levels, including collegiate and professional hockey in North America, as well as in Europe.
"I know what it's like in a league like the Central (Hockey League) and how important a community can be for a franchise," Coolen said. "We want to promote the players and the league, and our goal is to be a big part of the community."
