Steelheads Press Release

BOISE, Idaho - Five unanswered goals led the visiting Victoria Salmon Kings to a convincing 5-1 win over the Steelheads, in front of 4,301 fans at Qwest Arena in Boise, ID on Saturday night.

For the first time this season, the Steelheads have lost three straight, as they drop to 13-6-1 overall and 6-4-0 on home ice.

Forward Greg Hornby scored on the game’s first shot, just 21 seconds into the game. Rookie forward Kurt MacSweyn and defenseman Jarad Bourassa drew the assists on Hornby’s second of the year. Hornby’s marker was the quickest goal to start a home game for the Steelheads this season.

The lead would not last however, as Jade Galbraith countered for the visitors at 4:21 of the frame on the power play. Forward K.C. Timmons and blue-liner Nate Forster picked up the helpers. Then at 6:06, rookie Adam Taylor gave the Salmon Kings a 2-1 lead with his eighth of the season. Winger Lanny Gare and center Mike Wirll got the assists.

At the first intermission, there were only 13 combined shots, with the Steelheads holding a 7-6 edge.

The Salmon Kings (9-14-1) power play connected again at 6:35 of the second stanza. Wirll tapped home an errant shot by defenseman Steve Lingren, which caromed off the end boards. Wirll was stationed to the left of Steelheads’ goaltender Matt Yeats (eight saves) and was positioned perfectly to bang home the loose puck for Victoria’s second man advantage goal of the evening. Gare also added a helper on Wirll’s sixth of the season.

Mike Josephson then made it 4-1 with 3:07 left in the second frame, with forward Adam Huxley and defenseman Pat Sutton setting up the play.

The Steelheads held the Salmon Kings to just one shot in the third period, but the visitors managed to make it a four-goal game with their lone chance. K.C. Timmons netted his seventh of the year on the power play at the 7:07 mark of the third, making the score 5-1. Galbraith and Forster chipped in the assists. The one shot allowed was the fewest for a Steelheads opponent in a period this year, while it’s the second time the Salmon Kings have mustered just one shot in a stanza this season.

Yeats, who was making his first start in the last five contests, allowed five goals for the first time all year. With the loss, he dropped to 6-4-0.

Victoria’s 13 shots on goal is a season-low for a Steelheads opponent and a season-low for the Salmon Kings. However, the four-goal win was the largest margin of victory for the Salmon Kings this season.

David Currie, making his first start against the Steelheads in his career, turned aside 25 shots to improve to 3-5-2.

The Steelheads power play finished scoreless on four chances, and is just one for the last 17 over the past four outings. Victoria’s three man advantage goals, equals a season-high for a Steelheads opponent, a feat now accomplished four times.

The final game of this three-game series is Saturday, December 10 at 7:10 p.m. MST

His team was in 1st place...now in 3rd. Hope we're not headin the same place.

Should the Steelheads fire Laxdal now or wait until the end of the season?

Hell No they shouldn't fire him. Just slippin out of first for now, I am sure he'll make way back up to the top spot.

Wow 3-7-1 in their last 11. He has lost a lot of players to injurys and call ups including Blake.

As of 3-13 the Potatoe Heads have 73 points, which puts them in 3rd place for the West Division. The playoff spots for the West are...

Alaska 96 pts
Las Vegas 94 pts
Idaho 73 pts
Utah 70 pts

Not to mention that both Alaska and Las Vegas had a 12 unbeaten streak AT THE SAME TIME.

He has been hit by the call-up bug, He should have a chance to make a good run.
