TOM MURPHY AND MARK BERGE JOIN OU HOCKEY COACHING STAFF
As the University of OklahomaŽ Hockey club continues to prepare for the upcoming 2008-2009 season, the Sooners are extremely pleased to announce that Tom Murphy and Mark Berge have joined the OU Hockey coaching staff.
Coach Murphy joins the Sooners after spending the past six years as an assistant coach in the North American Hockey League, last year with the Wichita Falls Wildcats and the previous five years before that with the Texas Tornado. Coach Murphy, along with former Texas coach Tony Curtale, was instrumental in guiding the Tornado to back-to-back-to-back NAHL championships from 2003-2004 through 2005-2006. By joining the OU Hockey coaching staff, Coach Murphy will be reunited with several former Tornado players who are on the Sooners roster. "We are very fortunate to have Tom join our staff," said Sooners Head Coach Larry Donovan. "He is all about winning championships and playing at an elite level. Tom will ensure that our club is ready to compete for the ACHA National Championship at the end of the season."
Coach Berge re-joins the Sooners after taking a break from coaching last season. Originally, from Grand Forks, ND, Coach Berge played three and a half seasons of NCAA Division 1 hockey for the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux. He was drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers in the 1978 NHL Draft before relocating to Oklahoma City. Coach Berge was an assistant coach for the minor pro Oklahoma City Blazers (CHL) from 1992 through 1997. He also played for the Blazers late in the 1992-1993 season and coached youth hockey in Oklahoma City for over 14 years. "Mark is an excellent hockey coach and a tremendous friend of mine," said Head Coach Donovan. "I am so glad he has decided to be a part of our staff again. He'll bring a wealth of hockey knowledge, intensity and passion to our club."
==========
The 2008-2009 OU Hockey regular season schedule will be released shortly. The Sooners will play at least 22 home games and at least 36 games in total during the regular season before heading to the ACHA National Championship Tournament in Cleveland, Ohio in March 2009.
All OU Hockey home games are played at the Blazers Ice Centre, 8000 S. I-35, in Oklahoma City. For more information regarding season tickets, please call 405-631-3307.
