question about Beaumont, TX

Since Beaumont just lost their ECHL team this year, who moved to Ontario, California, is there any talk about someone putting a franchise in Beaumont for 2008-09? The building is there and the fanbase is, as far as I can tell, decent.

The building is there but there were endless disputes over leasing it, which led to the demise of the team. They should have started in the CHL to begin with - their travel costs had to be out of sight after most of the E teams in the deep south folded.

was at their site a few days ago and an article said there was only 975 people at the last playoff game. No fan base at all.

didn't the ECHL have a team in little rock, arkansas too that folded. I think little rock would be a good CHL city. right inbetween Memphis and Tulsa on I-40.

Arkansas had a CHL team that folded and an ECHL team that folded. I don't think either one lasted more than 2-3 years.

They were mostly operating at the same time, which was a huge problem. Neither could survive that way, so they both died.

Beaumont is trying to decide between purchasing the Austin franchise or the Corpus franchise. They're trying to get Corpus to match the "Five Free Wings" coupon Austin has included in the purchase. So far, Doug Frank won't budge.

Stay tuned.

Beaumont in the CHL would be great. I could go see them play when I visit my folks in Houston

I am hearing that Austin is trying to work something out down here. The AHL is going to Austin, and this will force the IceBats hand.

KFDM News has learned there won't be a hockey team playing at Ford Arena this year, but SMG General Manager John Hughes says the owner of the Austin Ice Bats is still intent on finding a local investor and fielding a team in Beaumont for the 2009 season.

In March, the owner of the Texas Wildcatters announced he was moving the team to Ontario, California.

The owner of the Austin Ice Bats, Randy Sanders, wants to move his team, and he visited with SMG officials several weeks ago and said he was trying to find a local investor to help him find a home in Beaumont for his hockey team.

But SMG General Manager John Hughes says it won't happen this year.
"We're not going to have hockey in Ford Arena this year," Hughes told KFDM News in a telephone conversation Wednesday afternoon.

"I spoke with Randy Sanders late Wednesday morning, and he told me the Ice Bats will sit out the season. It wasn't a matter of terms. It's just he was unsuccessful in the time frame he had, which was a month, in finding a local investor."

Hughes says he'll talk with Sanders in the near future.

"He expects to be back in Beaumont in the next few weeks to look for a local investor so he might do something here in the 2009 hockey season."

I figured that's what you would say and feel. I would feel the same way. So will you travel then to catch some games in the C or is it all over?
