Punk ass bitch? Explain that to me? Scam artists generally profit in some way from their efforts. Yea, I have to work 70+ hours a week to keep my ass afloat. Where was the scam in that?
Topeka is the team I want to buy with my mega-millions winnings, I invest about $10 a week towards THAT pipe dream. But in that regard, I would also buy the franchise for Dallas-Frisco. Rename them the Pussycats, and market the hell out of them, featuring the pink clad radio dude, JT. Would then change the name of the rink to the "Rainbow Room", you know, we would have to have a disco ball going as well. Could keep the stands full for the postgame showercam show. JT, I am sure you could be available for that play-by-play.
I really feel sorry for Topeka, the one thing that we all can hope for is that the NAHL continues to exist. If so, towns like Topeka can overcome all to keep the game in town.

It's no different than an NFL earning a first round bye. The Patriots only had to win 2 home games to get to the Super Bowl, while the NY Giants had to win three on the road. Fair? Sure. The Pats earned their cake postseason schedule, just as the Bandits earned their Saturday bye. It was up for grabs, and every team had an equal shot at it. St. Louis earned it. Plain and simple.
|
I'm not sure that is the best analogy really. Now, I have absolutely no problem with St. Louis getting Saturday off at the tournament. The rules were set, St. Louis most definitely earned the bye, and the games were played just like they should have been. It was completely on the up and up and that's how it should have gone.
I do question a little bit whether that format should continue. I don't think the NFL example is the best. Yes, the Pats had a bye in round one, and only had to win 3 games to win it all, compared to the Giants who had to win 4 games to win it all. However, I don't think that the bye week in the wild-card games in the NFL has that much of a benefit to the teams when it comes down to the actual Super Bowl itself. By the time the Super Bowl comes around, the two teams that are playing in it have pretty much had the same schedule (generally including a bye week for both teams the week before the big game) and neither team is really at much of an advantage at the Super Bowl. One of the teams may have had a benefit that helped them get to the big game, but neither team has a decided advantage in the big game.
Compare that to the Robertson Cup tournament. Unlike the NFL, the Robertson Cup is an extremely difficult schedule that is completely unlike the schedule the teams generally play. Mahoning Valley had to play 5 games in 5 days. St. Louis had to play 3 straight days, and then take a day off, and then play one more game. I think that schedule sets up a HUGE advantage for the first place team. You don't see that in the NFL. When the Super Bowl comes around, the bye that happened in round one of the playoffs really has no effect on the teams.
In my opinion, I want a national championship game to involve the best two teams, squaring off on even terms, and battling it out to see who is the best. I don't think the current set up allows for that. You have the first seed that enters the game with a big advantage over the second place team.
Now, maybe I'm wrong about the amount of benefit the first seed has. Maybe not having to play that extra game really is not that much of a benefit. However, I have a hard time believing that a team that plays 3 straight days, has a rest day, and then plays 1 more game does not have a tremendous advantage over a team that is playing their fifth game in 5 days.
Like I said, the rules were set and St. Louis certainly earned that bye. No problem with that. I'm just not crazy about having a national championship game being played where one team enters the game with a decided advantage over the other team (other than the advantage of simply being a better team). It was fair this year because the rules were set, everyone had a shot at the bye and St. Louis earned it. I would just kind of prefer the set up change in the future.
And for those that are ready to jump on the tired old bit about Topeka fans just whining because we lost - I will simply point out that this had absolutely no effect on Topeka. Topeka lost to a better Mahoning Valley team on Saturday.
