NAHL Trade Deadline Moves: Tyler Ludwig Rejoins Tornado for Stretch Run

Defenseman #56 Tyler Ludwig returns as NAHL trade deadline passes; Ludwig to strengthen blueline before heading to Western Michigan in the fall.
Tue, Jan 17 - Frisco, Texas

A stingy Texas Tornado defense that is allowing a league 2nd best 2.19 goals against per game, just got stronger as veteran Tornado defenseman #56 Tyler Ludwig was added to the Tornado roster late Sunday night before the NAHL trading deadline. Ludwig, who has played for the Tornado for the past two seasons, received a scholarship last season to play for the Western Michigan University Broncos this fall. However, two weeks before he was scheduled to go to college in August, Ludwig sustained a serious knee injury that would sideline him for 6-7 months. After undergoing surgery and rehabilitation in Dallas, Ludwig is now back and practicing with the Texas Tornado. His expected return to the line-up will be mid-February according to Tornado Head Coach and General Manager Tony Curtale. "It is obviously something we are very happy about, as Tyler will bring experience and poise to an already strong defensive corps. However, we want to make sure he is 100% before we bring him back for full competition, but his rehabilitation has been intense, and Tyler will be a much stronger player because of it," said Curtale. "We expect Tyler back around mid-February... maybe the 15th for Pros vs. Prospects II, or February 22nd vs. Texarkana."

Ludwig has played for the Tornado during both their National Championship seasons in Frisco, and the season prior to that in North Richland Hills during the 2002-03 season. Ludwig has played in 152 career Tornado games, scoring 52 points with 146 penalty minutes. He has also appeared in 30 playoff games, scoring 11 points. Tyler's brother Trevor Ludwig played for the Tornado from 2002-04, and is now a defenseman for the Providence Friars. His dad Craig Ludwig is a former standout defenseman, who played for the Minnesota North Stars/Dallas Stars franchise from 1991-99.

Wittman is still on the roster. He is playing in Triple AAA and could be called back at anytime.

First I checked my calendar to make sure today wasn't April 1. I guess what triggered this is the fact that the INS is AFU. Anybody and his dog can come in through Mexico, but let a hockey player back in the country from Canada (Stonehouse)? No way!

I agree! The only thing I can figure is that it had to do with a visa and him not "technically" working or something. Hell i don't know just taking a guess.

INS wouldn't let him back into the country. They (meaning the TT) found him a team to play for in Canada. I can't find the link - there was an article on the webpage about it last week.

Stonehouse wasn't the only NAHL Canadian born player to not make it back after going home for the holidays. Has something to do with a change in the rules that occured after they came down in the fall. The red tape would take to long and in fairness to the boys, their coaches dealt them to Canadian teams.

However, I think I read the Stonehouse was caught up in red tape of a different kind over what league/team has his rights. Tony mentioned something about Stonehouse during his interview with Cheeks last game. Tony's mic was turned up so much that I couldn't make it all out out but I think he said they might keep Deverin (sp?) on the roster and continue with immigration if the kid couldn't play in Canada.

At any rate, the problem had to do with INS rule changes that occurred after entering the US in the fall.

I think this was a good pickup, should pay dividends come playoff time.

You think? You have an amazing ability to grasp the obvious. Bravo Hell, with that kind of keen insight, we should all have PHD's.
