Brent Bilodeau, an assistant for one of the top franchises in the East Coast Hockey League, is the new coach of the Wichita Thunder, according to two sources close to the hiring.

Bilodeau, the assistant coach and assistant general manager for the Las Vegas Wranglers the past three seasons, is expected to be introduced at a news conference on Thursday.

Bilodeau would not confirm that he has been hired but said, "I think there's a press conference on Thursday. That would probably be my best answer right now."

Thunder general manager Joel Lomurno declined comment.

In Bilodeau's time in Las Vegas, all of it spent under coach Glen Gulutzan, the Wranglers have gone 146-38-32 (.750).

In 2005-06, the Wranglers won 53 games -- tied for the second most in ECHL history. Gulutzan was named the league's coach of the year.

In 2006-07, Las Vegas won the Brabham Cup as the ECHL's regular-season champion with a 46-12-14 record.

And in the most recently completed season, the Wranglers reached the Kelly Cup finals, losing in six games to Cincinnati.

Last week, Lomurno announced that Bilodeau was a finalist for the Thunder position with Kevin Kaminski, who has six years of head coaching experience.

Lomurno said that Bilodeau was key to Las Vegas' recruiting efforts and that he was "certainly ready to be a head coach."

Bilodeau, a first-round NHL draft pick in 1991 who spent 12 seasons as a defenseman in the minor leagues, faces a rebuilding job in Wichita. The Thunder is coming off the worst season in the 16-year history of the franchise.

Biladeau, 34, is married to former WNBA player Cass Bauer-Bilodeau. The couple has twin sons.

Shouldn't be too hard to spot him walking around at 6'4".

BTW his wife is also 6'4" and is a nurse.

just because i said hiring an assistant is a "GAMBLE" does not mean im not pleased. Would have hiring an established coach been less of a "GAMBLE"..... IMHO yes.

and leave my f-n shovel alone, dont you have something better to do.

Another rookie head coach, well it seem like he come from a good organization so we will see. At least he played in the pro's and has a clue about it unlike our last one.
