WEEK 9 CHL PLAYER OF THE WEEK!!

December 19, 2005 - Tulsa right winger Jaroslav Cesky earned Week Nine recognition from Oakley as the recipient of the Central Hockey League Player of the Week award. Cesky recorded five points in Oilers wins over Memphis and Wichita.

Cesky has played his best hockey of the season as of late, with 17 of his team leading 25 points coming in his last 10 contests. His shorthanded goal opened the scoring in a 2-1 victory over Memphis on December 16th, and he added two more goals (another shorthanded and one on the power play) and two assists the following evening in a 5-4 win over Wichita, giving him his second four-point game of the year. His hot start has him well on pace to top his career highs of 19 goals and 42 points recorded last season with Tulsa, and Cesky has teamed with linemates Jim Dahl (24 points) and Henry Kuster (21 points) to account for over 40 percent of the Oilers 174 points scored this season.

Don't know if this ever ended up on GR last year but I thought I'd let everyone know a little background on Jaro, nice read.

Just put the team differences/banter aside and think what you would have done in this situation.

Fate creates risky situation for Cesky

Before player was an Oiler, he saved others.
Jaroslav Cesky never wanted to be a hero.
The status was suddenly thrust upon him when a mad man decided to blow up a subway station in downtown Prague. Cesky, a right winger with the Tulsa Oilers and native of the Czech Republic, just happened to be in the wrong place three years ago during a trip home from college.
"It was in August," Cesky said. "I got home on Thursday and this happened Friday night about 6 o'clock when I was going to meet my friend. Everybody was busy going home from work and waiting for their trains. I heard a huge explosion, and I thought somebody had thrown a firecracker.
"People started panicking and everybody started running toward the exits. I was going with the crowd, then I turned around and saw a guy on his knees. There was a guy behind him with a wooden stake about two feet long with a knife taped to it. This guy stabbed the other guy twice in the back."
Cesky, a 5-foot-11, 190-pounder now in his first Central Hockey League season, saw two policemen, one male and one female, standing nearby. He told them what had happened and watched as they approached the subject.
"I was standing there wondering what would happen, when suddenly my train was coming," Cesky said. "I told the people not to come out of the train. The train left, and I turned around and I saw (the male) cop get (fatally) stabbed in his upper body near the heart. The female cop was trying to pull a club out, not her gun, and I threw the attacker on the ground.
"He got up and had a plastic tube in his hand. He pointed it at my face and the cop's face. We didn't know what it was, but he started smashing it against his own head trying to commit suicide. We found out later that it was an activator for a bag of explosives. They said it was enough to blow up the entire station."
Cesky said he proceeded to jump the man from behind, collar him around the neck and throw him to the ground once more. Cesky was lying on the suspect when police finally handcuffed him and took him away.
"It was a big deal in the Czech Republic," said Cesky, 26, who was attending Augsburg College in Minnesota at the time of the incident. "Everyone was asking 'Why didn't the cops use their guns?' They said the shots might deflect and hurt someone else. It turned out the guy was a Russian terrorist who was disappointed he couldn't get permission to work in the Czech Republic. His wife had gotten murdered in Moscow a few years before this, and I think it really screwed up his head. The police went to clubs and started searching for the Russian Mafia and illegal aliens."
Cesky was a national hero because of the incident and received front page headlines for days, along with television exposure. He was supposed to meet the president of the Czech Republic, but his parents took Cesky's place when he was forced to return to college.
"People over there asked me why I did it, and I tell them it was because she was a female cop and she didn't look like she knew what she was doing with the club," Cesky said. "Now they give the cops there more training and testing and they are in better shape.
"I felt bad because I had told the cops to go there (to the attacker). From watching cops on TV, I thought they would know what to do, but it seemed like they didn't. It all happened so fast, in about two minutes. After it was over I was shocked because I was watching the medics trying to save the cop's life and there was blood everywhere.
"People knew I was a hockey player and they asked me what kind of move I used. They asked me if I slashed him with my stick. It was a big deal, but two weeks later there was a bigger deal and people had something else to worry about. If you ask them, they will remember the incident, but they won't remember my name."
He may be anonymous again back home in Prague, but Cesky will never forget the day he could have lost his life.
